With the rainy and cool weather last weekend, I had time to read an exceptional story. (Note: This is not a free book). I love historical fiction, and I just finished Sunflower Sisters by Martha Hall Kelly.  There are a few gritty scenes as the period is the Civil War. The novel is told from three characters’ point of view: Anne-May, a plantation owner; Jemma, Anne-May’s slave; and Georgiana Woolsey, a Civil War nurse and abolitionist. Jemma was my favorite character in the story. Her strength, courage, and compassion made me cheer for her. Anne-May was truly evil, yet the author made me have sympathy for her. And finally, Georgianna was amazing. She too had courage and strength. When I finished the book, I learned the character of Georgianna was inspired by a real historical figure. She and her mother served as nurses at the battle of Gettysburg. I highly recommend this book.

Sunflower Sisters is the third book of a series. I enjoyed Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly a few years ago. It’s a World War II novel. Now, I must read Lost Roses set during World War I.  The main characters of each book are different generations of the Woolsey-Ferriday family.  It’s my understanding each book can be read independently.

Another book I’m looking forward to reading is Along A Storied Trail by my friend Ann H. Gabart. This historical novel features the packhorse librarians of Eastern Kentucky during the Great Depression. I’m a librarian, so how could I not read this book.  Publishers Weekly gave Along A Storied Trail a coveted starred review.  It releases on June 1, 2021.  Click on the book cover to pre-order.
