As the new year unfolds, I find myself reflecting on the past year and the tumultuous journey it has been. One thing, in particular, stands out – the elusive nature of peace. The uncertainties and challenges of the year gone by have often left me anxious, and I know many of you can relate to this feeling. But as we step into the new year, my sincere desire is to reclaim His gift of peace.

Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” (John 14:27). These words echo in my mind as I strive to find tranquility amidst the chaos. The best weapon I have in my arsenal is His word.

During the COVID-19 lockdown, when our country experienced so much political turmoil, I found solace in the verses of Psalms 37. Memorizing these words turned out to be my shield against anxiety, extinguishing the fiery darts of Satan. I often personalized these scriptures as if God Himself was whispering words of encouragement in my ears. It goes something like this:

“Shelia, Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers! For they will soon fade like the grass, and wither like the green herb.”

“Shelia, Trust in Me, and do good; dwell in the land I gave your family and befriend faithfulness.”

“Shelia, Delight yourself in Me, and I will give you the desires of your heart.

I won’t include the entire chapter, but I encourage you to open your favorite version of the Bible, read it aloud, and insert your name to make it more intimate.

Time with Jesus has been the answer to my anxiety, and I believe it’s the answer to my problems. Prayer walking in nature, enjoying His creation, and singing praise songs always fills me with His peace. Sometimes, it requires me to rise earlier than usual to have a quiet moment with the Lord, but my sacrifice of sleep is rewarded with the gift of His Peace.

As we welcome this new year, I pray that you, too, discover His peace that surpasses all understanding. Let His words guide you, heal you, and bring you peace. Let’s embrace the new year with an open heart and a tranquil mind. May this year bring you closer to tranquility and serenity, and may you find joy in the smallest of moments.

Happy New Year!
